Looking back on a productive event: 5G: Boost for the energy sector! Together with the Digital Energy programme at The Green Village, we connected large, medium and small companies in the energy sector with IT-innovators. The aim: to exchange knowledge and map the challenges and opportunities for the Dutch energy market.
Sharing knowledge and workshop
After an introduction about Do IoT Fieldlab and the Future Network Services programme, Jos Berière (Programlead 6G Applications at TNO) pointed out the opportunities with 5G and 6G. Serge de Mul Serge de Mul (CEO at Comforest), shared his experiences with the latest communication technologies as an entrepreneur. Together, all participants explored the challenges we are currently facing and the bottlenecks we expect to encounter in the future. In small groups, we explored what digital applications could offer a solution. It was interesting to see all the challenges on adopting telecommunications in the energy sector. We collectively felt the urge to speed up innovations!
Challenges in the energy sector
The energy sector faces major challenges. Climate change is forcing us to find quick and large-scale solutions. More wind turbines means more maintenance. Increasing numbers of electric cars result in higher peak loads. Introducing more smart meters will cause more data transfer. And last but not least: deploying more technology implies a larger education effort. 5G offers opportunities for robust digital solutions. By collaborating in creating these solutions, we can prevent and resolve several future bottlenecks.
