Smart building in Delft

Wow Project

Lights on in buildings after office hours: it is a common sight in the Netherlands. This project transforms the current innovation hub on the TU Delft Campus (where Do IoT Fieldlab is also located) into a living lab where researchers, SMEs and field labs collaborate to develop and validate innovative smart building technologies. It focuses on two key themes: Smart Energy Use and Smart Occupancy Sensing.

Intelligent buildings

By combining technologies such as AI, edge computing, and advanced wireless sensing with the help of a Beyond 5G network, the project showcases how intelligent buildings can become more energy-efficient, safer, and more responsive to their users, contributing to solutions for challenges such as grid congestion.

Wireless networks

Beyond 5G and Wi-Fi networks can potentially be used as occupancy sensors by analysing changes in wireless signals caused by the presence and movement of people. This approach could enable buildings to monitor occupancy without dedicated sensors, enabling smart building management without the need for additional sensing devices. Edge computing platforms can quickly and securely process this data locally to support smarter energy management and building operations.

Societal value

Buildings of the future should not only be more sustainable but also safer. This project demonstrates how smart building technologies can address both. Buildings account for a significant portion of energy consumption. Smart technologies can reduce this while lowering operational costs and supporting sustainability goals through real-time energy optimisation.

At the same time, ensuring the safety of people within a building is always a crucial challenge. This project can also help with this part, as innovative occupancy sensing enables emergency responders to gain valuable insights into building occupancy during evacuations, thereby improving situational awareness and potentially saving lives.

Funding

This project is enabled by the Kansen voor West programme (aimed at promoting the competitiveness of the Dutch Western region) and the European Union.
