The future of technical training is immersive, connected, and safer. In this experiment, we combine VR, haptic feedback, and 5G technology to teach crucial skills needed for offshore maintenance and operations.
The combined approach allows technicians and students to practice tasks in a realistic virtual environment before applying their skills in practice. The collaboration partners explore how new technologies can prepare the workforce for future energy challenges and enable safer, more efficient remote operations.
Reliable and fast network connections are essential to ensure that actions in a virtual environment accurately reflect real-world operations. We are investigating how connectivity performance affects task execution and safety by integrating different 5G network configurations into the VR environment. The platform provides a realistic environment for researchers and companies to test and improve teleoperation solutions.
We aim to accelerate the development of future connected and autonomous operations. The energy sector is becoming increasingly complex, creating a growing need for professionals with the skills to safely operate and maintain new technologies. However, training in realistic environments can be costly, time-consuming and limited by safety requirements. Therefore, we are using VR and haptic feedback to provide students and professionals with a safe and realistic way to practice technical procedures and prepare for real-world operations.
The VR training module will be tested with secondary vocational students and developed together with education and industry partners. A train-the-trainer package will enable teachers and organisations to use and scale the training within their own programmes.
This project is part of the WoW project and enabled by the Kansen voor West programme (aimed at promoting the competitiveness of the Dutch Western region) and the European Union.

Reliable coverage is not only important on land, but also at sea. Certain parts of the Dutch coastal waters are not covered. Therefore, startup Drocean aims to create a complete and detailed 5G/4G coverage map of the North Sea to foster within the Dutch maritime sector.
Applying 5G mobile communications technology in a closed environment such as a greenhouse is relatively new. Numerous studies have examined the effects of electromagnetic fields on flora and fauna. Yet, the novel frequencies used by 5G systems are higher than those used by 2G-4G networks. They potentially have a greater impact on smaller organisms, such as plants and pollinators. The aim of this project is therefore to determine whether a 5G network has any effect on the growth of plants or on the behavior of pollinators in a greenhouse.
How can 5G help hearing-impaired people have a much clearer hearing of speech in a noisy environment? Dutch company Absolute Audio Labs is experimenting with integrating 5G technology into a hearing aid. Their aim is to significantly improve the audibility of a conversation, even when someone is whispering.
