During our Lunch & Learn workshop session ‘Fly forward: Discover the future of connectivity for drones’, we zoomed in on the possibilities 5G and 6G will offer.
We learned a lot from Jos Berière (TNO) and Egbert Swierts (Drone Delivery Services) about how Drone Delivery Services is collaborating with the Future Network Services program. The aim is to enable safe and reliable BVLOS flight (beyond visual line of sight) with drones, initially focusing on cases with societal impact, such as delivery of medical supplies while gaining valuable expertise and knowledge for the sector.
During a fruitful discussion, we defined key challenges faced by SMEs in adopting 5G solutions such as uncertainty in connectivity and coverage, pricing of new infrastructure as well as lack of insight in coverage in rural areas.

Today, the National 6G Testbed officially goes live. This initiative offers Dutch SMEs and startups the chance to develop, test and validate 6G applications under realistic conditions – well before the future rollout of 6G. The testbed includes the latest mobile communication infrastructure and is embedded in a network of five regional 6G Field Labs. These technologies go beyond 5G and form the foundation for the development of 6G. The programme is part of Future Network Services (FNS), for which TNO acts as lead partner.
