New project: Smart building in Delft

Solutions for challenges such as grid congestion? They might be closer than you’d expect. Imagine a building that knows what is happening indoors and adjusts its energy use accordingly. By combining insights into occupancy, energy consumption, and indoor climate, smart buildings can reduce peak loads and use energy more efficiently. This makes buildings not only more sustainable, but also safer and more efficient.

New project: Smart building in Delft

Within the new Smart Building in Delft project, together with partners Comforest, RadioSense, and Highlight Delft, we are exploring how wireless technologies such as 5G and Wi-Fi can be used as sensors. The aim is to monitor parameters, such as occupancy, to transform buildings into intelligent environments. By analysing changes in wireless signals, this approach could enable privacy-friendly, scalable and cost-effective occupancy monitoring without the need for additional sensing hardware. The experiment is being conducted in our own building on the TU Delft Campus.
